Tank battalion types are detailed below. Each battalion type will request upgraded equipment within its line. For example, Medium Tank battalions will not request Great War Tanks, but Light Tank brigades currently using Light Tank I will request Light Tank II. Great War tanks are used by light tank battalions.

Variants

Each tank model has three variants, each unlocked by an individual tech: Tank Destroyers, SP Artillery, and SP Anti-Air. The buttons for these techs are attached to the base models. The techs themselves are much quicker to research than the base models (base 42 days).

Variant battalions can only be used as line battalions, not support brigades. Switching production from the base model to a variant results in a much lower loss of production efficiency than usual; it can be useful to co-opt an obsolete tank line into producing variants rather than upgraded tanks. This represents the historical practice of repurposing obsolete tanks into specialized variants, which was much cheaper and quicker than simply scrapping them.

Light, medium, heavy, super-heavy and modern variants each have their own battalion types and will not request equipment from other lines. Heavier variants are slower, so they should be reserved for heavier divisions since they will negate the speed advantage of light divisions. They use less equipment than the corresponding tank battalions.

Tank destroyers

Tank destroyers are dedicated anti-tank vehicles. They are essentially an anti-tank gun on a tank chassis; tank destroyer battalions can be thought of as the armored or mobile equivalent of infantry anti-tank battalions, but unlike infantry equipment it cannot be used as a support brigade. Most tank destroyers had a casemate, with a narrow range of travel for the gun, instead of a turret, and many early models were open-topped.

Compared to the base models, they have similar defense, very low breakthrough (none more than 2), lower soft attack, and much higher hard attack and piercing, especially for the early models. They have no organization and do not benefit from doctrines that provide organization to tank battalions, so they cannot be used by themselves (except the AirLand Battle doctrine at the end of the Superior Firepower tree that gives them 5 organization). They can pierce heavy tanks of earlier tech year, but not the same tech year. They have higher hard attack and piercing compared to infantry anti-tank of the same tech year.

SP Artillery

Self-propelled artillery are essentially artillery guns on tank chassis. They can be thought of as the armored or mobile equivalent of infantry artillery brigades, but unlike infantry equipment it cannot be used as a support brigade. Most SP artillery had a fixed gun mounting with limited horizontal travel instead of a turret, and many early models were open-topped.

They have much more soft attack than infantry artillery, but are much more expensive. Compared to the base tank models, they have negligible breakthrough, piercing and hard attack, lower hardness and armor, comparable defense, and much higher soft attack. They have no organization and do not benefit from doctrines that provide organization to armored battalions, so they cannot be used by themselves. They are especially useful in motorized and light tank divisions to boost their soft attack.

SP Anti-Air

Dedicated armoured vehicles carrying anti-air guns came late in the war, the earliest example being the Hungarian 40M Nimród (in the game this is Light SP AA II). Most mobile anti-air was simply mounted on trucks and so was motorized rather than armoured. They can be thought of as the mobile or armoured version of infantry anti-air.

SP AA has minor hard and soft attack compared to other vehicles; they have the same air attack as infantry AA (actually less after upgrades), but are fast and armoured. However, they are capable of piercing light tanks, obsolete medium tanks, and mechanized battalions. Like SP Anti-Air they have no organization by themselves and no doctrines (not even AirLand Battle) give them any, so they must be supported by infantry (probably motorized or mechanized) or tanks. In terms of production, they do not require additional tungsten beyond what the base model needs; light SP AA is slightly more expensive than the base models.
