西班牙共和国 is a minor power located on the Iberian Peninsula, bordering 葡萄牙 to the west, 法国 to the northeast, the Mediterranean Sea around the south to the west, the Atlantic Ocean to the north and northwest, and the 联合王国 by its colonial holding of Gibraltar. Republican Spain also borders France via Spain's colonial holdings in Spanish Africa, Rio de Oro and Equatorial Guinea.

Geography

Spain lies in Southwestern Europe, with most of its land being on the Iberian peninsula. 1930s Spain also comprises the Balearic Islands and African territory and Islands. Parts of North Africa, namely the Rio de Oro region of modern-day Marocco, Western Sahara, Equatorial Guinea and the Canary Islands off the coast of Northwest Africa is owned and controlled by Spain.

Spain is dominated by mountainous and hilly terrain, and mainland Spain is very uneven, with 45 percent of it being covered by the Meseta Plateau. The plateau is rarely flat, with many uneven hills, mountains, and highlands. Spain contains many significant mountain ranges including the Baetic Mountains in the south, the Central and Iberian Chain in the center, and Cantabrian and Pyrenees Mountain ranges in the northwest and northeast respectively. There is also the fertile Andalusian Plain and other basins. There are many large coastal plains, with bays, coves, and sandy beaches. Along the Bay of Biscay there are large coastal, rugged cliffs. The Strait of Gibraltar separates Spain and Europe from Africa, specifically Morocco, with the closest points being only 13 km apart. Finally, mainland Spain contains over 1,500 rivers of which are mostly small. Significant rivers are the Duero, Ebro and Guadalquivir.

Spain shares a long border with its neighbor 葡萄牙 which makes up the rest of the Iberian peninsular. It borders 法国 in the north, with the tall Pyrenees mountain range making a natural border between the two nations and in the south through their African colonies. Spain also borders 联合王国 in the south with British controlled Gibraltar.

Spain has multiple important borders to bodies of water, such as the Mediterranean Sea, Strait of Gibraltar, Atlantic Ocean and Bay of Biscay.

Historical background

Following the Provisional Government between April and December 1931, the 1931 Constitution effectively established the Republic. The Spanish Republic is generally divided in three eras, the First Biennium, the Dark Biennium, and the Popular Front government.

The Second Spanish Republic was proclaimed when King Alfonso XIII left the country following municipal elections in which leftist candidates won the majority of votes, and the Spanish population celebrated the beginning of the Second Republic and social pressure made the political regime change. Niceto Alcalá-Zamora became the President, but the victory of the left-wing was nullified in 1934, when José Maria Gil-Robles of the right-wing CEDA faction was swept into power, and started to purge the military of leftists. In 1936, Manuel Azaña of the Popular Front, a coalition of left-wingers, narrowly became the President, and the right-wing officers in the military plotted a coup which took place in July 1936. The Republican government went into exile on 1 April 1939, when the last of the Republican forces surrendered to the Nationalist rebels, led in part by Generalísimo Francisco Franco, ending the Spanish Civil War.

In 1936, the Second Spanish Republic is riven by internal divisions that proves to be increasingly intractable. As such, a civil war is inevitable and the player can only choose between supporting either the 西班牙国 or the 西班牙共和国 Republicans. Specifically, a countdown will commence after the scheduled elections in February 1936, and the civil war will break out once the timer expires. It is in the interest of the Republican player to delay the civil war as long as possible via decisions so as to gather the maximum possible strength to fight against the Nationalists.

In 1830 King Ferdinand VII promulgated the Pragmatic Sanction and made his daughter, the future Isabella II, heir presumptive. This act removed his brother Infante Carlos from the line of succession, and so, upon the King's death, supporters of Infante Carlos ignited a series of civil wars, uniting under the banner of Carlism and fighting for the reinstatement of the Salic line of succession.

A century later, the Carlist movement is still very much alive, and its militas, called Requetés, train unceasingly in preparation for the time where they will once more be needed to defend Christianity and champion the return of the rightful King.

The failed "Sanjurjada" military coup attempt in 1932 still casts it shadow over the Spanish military to this day. In the aftermath, various disloyal military commanders, among them the coup's leader José Sanjurjo, fled to exile in Portugal and continue their plotting even now.

Even this failure has not discouraged disloyal officers, however, as even within Spain itself many desire to see a return to a Monarchy, or even a strong Fascist dictatorship. Too strong meddling by the government in the internal affairs of the military may well spark yet another uprising; far more violent and bloody than the last.

Industry: Republican Spain starts with a modest industrial base and its factories scattered throughout the entire country.
Resources: Republican Spain starts with a moderate amount of steel and tungsten and virtually nothing else. Note that some of its steel is located in Spanish Africa, an occupied state; as such, only a fraction of the steel is available for use at game start.

Republican Spain starts the game in 1936 with a relatively small army, a mid-sized navy, albeit outdated, and a small air force. As a result of the national spirit Military Disloyalty, the player cannot modify the military in any way until the civil war breaks out. Overall, it has a total manpower of 324.76K, of which 124.30K is tied up in the army, 17.67K in the navy, 1.74K in the air force, and 3.90K in garrison, leaving 198.72K available for recruitment.
