愛爾蘭（Ireland），是西歐的一個島國，它與聯合王國的北愛爾蘭同屬一個島嶼。

歷史背景

因英國統治愛爾蘭而經歷了長達七個世紀的衝突，在20世紀初期，緊張局勢日益加劇。

自1880年代以來，愛爾蘭立憲民族主義者就要求在英聯邦內部實行自治。那時，真正獨立的支持者很少。1912年，英國接受了這些要求。但是北部的阿爾斯特州（Ulster）的親英工會主義者成立了準軍事團體來反對它，而愛爾蘭則做出了回應。1914年第一次世界大戰的爆發既拖延了危機，也阻止了地方自治的實施。

1916年4月24日，「復活節起義」（「Easter Rising」）武裝叛亂尋求獨立的愛爾蘭共和國（Irish Republic）。當時它很少獲得公眾支持，但是英國對它的強硬而隨意的反應改變了愛爾蘭人民的觀點，開始了一個「物質共和主義」（「physical-force republicanism」）和英國對愛爾蘭人民進行報復的循環。這助長了民主社會主義的新芬黨（Sinn Féin party）及其愛爾蘭共和軍的政治崛起。

1932年，反條約的新芬黨成為多數黨。他們由埃阿蒙·德·瓦萊拉（Éamonde Valera）領導，埃阿蒙·德·瓦萊拉曾是1921年愛爾蘭共和國的領導人，隨後成為新芬黨的領導人。愛爾蘭最終從大蕭條中解脫，德·瓦萊拉也停止了1880年代向英國匯款的農業債務。雙方的報復性關稅使愛爾蘭經濟受到重創，後來，這使愛爾蘭在第二次世界大戰中處於中立地位，但這使英國航運更容易受到德國U型潛艇的攻擊。
